Corneal deswelling response to hard and hydrogel extended wear lenses.
نویسنده
چکیده
The amount of initial corneal swelling and the time course of corneal deswelling were measured after overnight wear of several types of hard and hydrogel lenses. Deswelling occurred in the right eye with the lens still on the cornea. In the left eye the lens was removed at eye opening and left off the cornea during deswelling. For lenses of equal nominal oxygen transmissibility, hard lenses initially induced greater corneal swelling than hydrogel lenses after overnight wear. The rate of deswelling during the first 15 min after hard lens wear was significantly greater than a comparable time period after hydrogel lens wear both with the lenses on and off the eye during deswelling. After the initial 15 min of eye opening, no significant difference in the deswelling rates with hard or hydrogel lenses could be shown under either deswelling condition.

Corneal swelling response to contact lenses worn under extended wear conditions.
Corneal thickness changes were monitored in ten subjects (1) over a 36-hour period without contact lens wear and (2) during 7 days continuous wear of three types of hydrogel contact lenses of different back vertex powers. Measured on awakening, the mean overnight central corneal edema without lenses was 3.0% ± 1.2%. With the lenses used in this study, the mean overnight corneal swelling over th...
متن کاملCritical oxygen levels to avoid corneal edema for daily and extended wear contact lenses.
The relationship between corneal edema and hydrogel lens oxygen transmissibility was examined for both daily and extended contact lens wear by measuring the corneal swelling response induced by a variety of contact lenses over a 36-hr wearing period. The relationships derived enable average edema levels that occur with daily and extended wear in a population of normal young adults to be predict...
متن کاملRisk of corneal inflammatory events with silicone hydrogel and low dk hydrogel extended contact lens wear: a meta-analysis.
PURPOSE High Dk silicone hydrogel (SH) lenses have been shown to significantly decrease the risk of hypoxic complications compared to traditional low Dk hydrogels. However, the risks of inflammatory complications with SH compared to low Dk lenses are not as clear. A meta-analysis was performed to combine the relevant literature to evaluate the risks of corneal inflammatory events in users of SH...
متن کاملIncidence of keratitis of varying severity among contact lens wearers.
AIM To determine the incidence of non-severe keratitis (NSK) and severe keratitis (SK) among wearers of current generation contact lenses. METHODS A 12 month, prospective, hospital based epidemiological study was conducted by examining all contact lens wearers presenting with a corneal infiltrate/ulcer to a hospital centre in Manchester. A clinical severity matrix was used to differentiate be...
متن کاملTear film inflammatory mediators during continuous wear of contact lenses and corneal refractive therapy.
OBJECTIVES To study changes in tear film inflammatory mediators following continuous wear of silicone-hydrogel lenses and corneal refractive therapy with reverse geometry contact lenses. DESIGN A prospective, case-control study. METHODS Twenty-eight subjects had worn silicone-hydrogel lenses on a 30-night continuous wear basis. Thirty-two subjects had worn corneal refractive therapy lenses ...
